The history of the San Francisco 49ers dates back to 1946, when the team became a charter member of the All American Football Conference. In 1950, the San Francisco 49ers joined the NFL after the AAFC merged with the NFL.
The 49ers nickname is derived from the huge influx of gold prospectors that arrived in Northern California in 1849. The San Francisco 49ers are owned by the DeBartolo/York family, who purchased the team in 1978. The Niners are the first professional sports team to be based in California.
Candlestick Park is the home of the San Francisco 49ers and it opened in 1960. Candlestick Park currently seats 69,762 fans. The San Francisco 49ers are a member of the National Football Conference of the National Football League and compete in the NFC West Division.
The 49ers have won six NFC Championships and five Super Bowls – XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV and XXIX.
