The history of the New England Patriots dates back to 1960. The Boston Patriots were founded by Billy Sullivan, when he was awarded the eighth franchise of the newly formed American Football League. The team changed its name to the New England Patriots when it moved to Foxborough, Massachusetts in 1971.
The team’s first proposed name change was the Bay State Patriots, which the NFL denied. Team colors are navy, silver, red and white and the mascot is Pat Patriot. Robert Kraft, current owner of the New England Patriots, purchased the team in 1994.
Gillette Stadium is the home of the New England Patriots and it opened in 2002. Gillette Stadium currently seats 68,756 spectators. The New England Patriots are a member of the American Football Conference of the National Football League and compete in the AFC East Division.
The Patriots have been one of the most successful NFL franchises of the 2000’s. The team owns seven AFC Championships and has won three Super Bowls – XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX.
