The history of the New Orleans Saints dates back to 1967 when the franchise was established to help gain Congressional approval of the AFL-NFL merger. The Saints began as an NFL expansion team and were majority owned by John Mecom, a Texas oilman. The Saints team colors are black and old gold – signifying the team’s symbolic relationship with oil. The logo is a fleur-de-lis and the fight song is “When the Saints Go Marching In”. The Saints played their home games in Tulane Stadium until the 1974 season. The New Orleans Saints were sold in 1985 to Tom Benson, the current owner of the Saints.

The Louisiana Superdome is the home of the New Orleans Saints and it opened in 1975. The Louisiana Superdome currently seats 73,208 fans. The New Orleans Saints are a member of the National Football Conference of the National Football League and compete in the NFC South Division. The team, after compiling one of the worst NFL records throughout its history, have become one of the best teams in the league. The Saints were NFC Champs in 2009 and went on to win Super Bowl XLIV over the Colts.
