The history of the Carolina Panthers began on October 26, 1993 when the NFL owners voted unanimously for Charlotte, North Carolina to receive the 29th NFL franchise. Team colors are black, blue and silver and the mascot is Sir Purr, a costumed Panther. The Carolina Panthers majority owner is Jerry Richardson, who played professionally for the Baltimore Colts. Richardson is the first former NFL player since George Halas to have majority ownership of an NFL franchise.

Charlotte, North Carolina is the home of the Carolina Panthers and the team calls Bank of America Stadium home. Bank of America Stadium currently seats 73,778 fans and it opened in 1996. The Carolina Panthers are a member of the National Football Conference of the National Football League and compete in the NFC South Division. The Panthers were NFC Champs in 2003 and lost to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
